Multiplayer Is in the Works: Here Is the Plan

Code Tycoon is getting multiplayer: to compete with your friends, or to build something together. The question we hear most often is: can I play this with my friends? Not yet, but we are working on it. This post explains the plan.

To be clear up front: multiplayer is in development. Nothing of it is playable yet, and there is no release date. This is the plan, not a promise of a date.

1. Weekly Challenge

Every week, everyone plays the same start: the same scenario, the same world, the same seed. Your result goes onto a Steam leaderboard.

  • You see where your friends ended up and where you stand worldwide.
  • Same start for everyone, so the only difference is how you play.

2. Shared World

You keep playing your own single-player company, at your own pace. But your Steam friends' companies show up in your world as competitors, with their real figures. As your friends play, their companies are updated with every in-game month. Your friend lands a big year? You will feel it on the market.

3. Co-Op

You and your friends run one company together, each with your own area: one handles staff and the office, one the projects and development, one finances and marketing. Big spending needs the others' approval. One player hosts, friends join through a Steam invite or the lobby.

4. Competitive

Several players, each with their own company, on one shared market. Whoever accepts a project first gets it. And yes: you can already take over AI companies today, and here you can take over each other too. Whoever gets taken over starts again with a new company. One player hosts, friends join through a Steam invite or the lobby.

No servers, no port forwarding

All four modes run entirely over Steam: leaderboards, Steam lobbies and Steam's relay network. There is no game server of ours in between. That means no port forwarding for you, and no server of ours that could ever go offline.

Which one first?

The four modes will not arrive at the same time. Tell us which one you want first, in the comments below or in the Steam discussions. It helps us decide the order.

Thanks for playing, and for all the reports and ideas so far.
